Former NFL player Corwin Brown claims mental defect suffered in football – NFL News
Corwin Brown, a former American professional football league player claimed to have been suffering from a mental defect, which he is using it to his defence against three felonies charges he has been facing while on trial at St.
Joseph Superior Court.
Brown has played National Football League (NFL), the premier American football league, for eight consecutive years.
William Stanley, attorney of Corwin Brown, said that he believed the former player had been suffering from a brain injury. He added that the injury had been caused during his eight years of professional football.
Brown, who has also worked as an assistant coach with a couple of teams, is accused of beating his wife. He is further accused of confinement (of his wife) and being armed with deadly weapons.
(Brown) "is not responsible for his conduct on Aug. 12, 2011 … because he lacked the substantial capacity to appreciate the wrongfulness of his conduct or to conform his conduct to the requirements of law, as the result of a mental
disease or defect," his attorney said in his notice to court.
Jane Woodward Miller, a judge at St. Joseph Court is expected to announce appointment of two doctors to examine the claim of the defendant.
Brown's counsel has further requested to be allowed to give a list of doctors to be chosen for his client's mental evaluation, saying that there was a shortage of doctors locally who know about the game of football and the related
injuries.
Police arrested Brown in a seven hours effort. After some resistance he finally gave himself up into police custody. He however shot himself in the stomach before that.
He was released by police at posting of $5000 bond. The judge has already delayed his hearing as Brown had undergone some examination at University of Michigan. Results of the testing however were not released.
The player faces 31 years imprisonment in case of his conviction.
Brown has played in NFL for eight consecutive seasons. This included four with the New England Patriots, two at Detroit Lions and two with the New York Jets.
