Former NHL Hall of Famer Mark Messier in support of a hockey complex in Bronx
Former NHL Hall of Famer Mark Messier is in support of a hockey complex in Bronx so that their young and upcoming players can have a stage or a platform to train themself and practice the game.
In past few years, the area has produced some very good and talented players as some of their players got selected in the NHL Draft.
Nicholas Kerdiles and Emerson Etem were two players which got selected in the latest NHL draft by Anaheim Ducks and last year their defenseman Matt Donovan was selected by New York Islanders.
With their players improving and knocking at the doors of hockey promoters that they need some area to play and so that new players can also have some kind of help to play the game, former NHL hall of famer Mark Messier has now urged authorities to do something
about it.
Messier told the Riverdale press that the thought of children playing and taking it as sports got his excited about it and made it mind to help them in it. He wants youngsters to be given a chance so that they can learn, get to know about it, as Messier
said,
"That's what interested me about this project, lending our hand to the kids in the community, using hockey as a metaphor for life, and providing these kids with skills for life, that no matter what they do, no matter where they go, they can take these lessons
with them”.
Talking to New York Daily News, Messier also told that this centre will give much more opportunities to the younger generation and the natives of the place, as they plan not just to give an area to play but also an opportunity to excel, as he added,
"[The ice sports center] will open a new world of possibilities for the future generations of young people in the Bronx. This project is not just about building rinks, it's about creating opportunities for the kids in the Bronx."
Messier himself is an NHL legend who played it for 24 years and played 1756 matches, scoring 694 goals, 1193 assists and 1887 total points.
