Former NHL players and coaches Pat Quinn and Scotty Bowman to coach Toronto and Detroit alumni teams
Pat Quinn, former National Hockey League (NHL) player and coach will be the man behind the bench of Toronto Maple Leafs and Scotty Bowman, a hall of famer and former NHL coach will be leading Detroit Red Wings in this year’s Hockey Winter Classic festival
featuring alumni teams of both franchises.
It will not be first time that Pat Quinn would be associated with Toronto Maple Leafs as he has previously played for Toronto Maple Leafs and coached them as well whereas Scotty Bowman will refresh his memories of coaching Detroit Red Wings after a long
time as he did it from 1992-2002.
The 69-year-old, Pat Quinn played for three teams in his NHL career as a player, which are Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and Atlanta Flames and he is also former coach and general manager of Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks,
Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers.
78-year-old, Scotty Bowman on the other hand, has not got much of the experience as a player because he had suffered a very serious injury and his skull got fractured while playing in a minor hockey league game.
Father of Stan Bowman, current Chicago Blackhawks’ general manager, Scotty started his coaching career in 1967 and coached five major league teams in a period of 45 years, which include St. Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens, Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins
and Detroit Red Wings. He won five Stanley Cups with Montreal Canadiens, one with Pittsburgh Penguins and thrice with Detroit Red Wings.
Pat Quinn will be assisted by another hall of famer, 85-year-old Red Kelly who himself enjoyed a successful NHL career as a player by winning 4 Stanley Cups and on the other hand Bowman will be assisted by 59-year-old Barry Smith who had occupied same position
and Bowman during his coaching days with Detroit Red Wings,
Detroit Red Wings are expected to play with right winger Mickey Redmond, left winger John Ogrodnick, defensemen Chris Chelios, Larry Murphy, Mark Howe and goaltender Chris Osgood whereas Toronto Maple Leafs’ expected roster would look like Mats Sundin, Darcy
Tucker, Doug Gilmour, Curtis Joseph, Johnny Bower, Rick Vaive, Wendel Clark, Jim McKenny and Ron Ellis.
Scotty Bowman thinks that it is going to be a great evening and it would be a great experience as he said,
“This looks like a great event coming up. This is going to be quite the experience for everybody. When you haven’t been around the people for a long time it’s exciting, for sure.”
