Former New York Giant, Brandon Jacobs, joins San Francisco 49ers – NFL News
New York Giants defeated San Francisco 49ers in the National Football Conference (NFC) championship game in the last National Football League (NFL) season, but the former is losing its players to the latter during the offseason.
First, it was wide receiver, Mario Manningham, who joined 49ers and now it is running back, Brandon Jacobs, who has reportedly joined 49ers for one year.
Both players were a part of Giants’ Super Bowl winning squad last season.
The 49ers are yet to officially announce the deal and no official word has so far come from the player or his agent.
Jacobs, who started his professional NFL career with Giants in 2005, was a part of the team’s squad when it won the Super Bowl XLII and most recent XLVI.
The Giants reportedly offered a pay cut, which was not acceptable to the player and he eventually parted ways with Giants.
He had also expressed interest in joining New York Jets, but he has now joined the 49ers, which is becoming a favourite destination for former Giants’ players.
Before Jacobs’ signing, 49ers gave a two-year contract to Manningham, who was involved in the Super Bowl XLVI’s most-talked-about move as he caught a spectacular pass from quarterback, Eli Manning, to continue the playing drive that later went on to become the game-winning drive.
Recently, Giants’ coach, Tom Coughlin, also hinted that Giants could possibly sign Jacobs off the free market. However, nothing concrete could establish around that development.
49ers already have two star running backs in their squad. Leading from the front is Frank Gore, who needs no introduction and then there is Kendall Hunter, who serves as Gore’s backup.
In such a scenario, Jacobs signing is considered as a misfit by some observers as they think that Jacobs’ role will only be restricted to serving as backup.
Before being released by Giants, Jacobs was scheduled to earn $4.4 million in 2012 along with a roster bonus of $500,000. However, the team management was reluctant in spending more money and offered to renegotiate the player’s contract.
Jacobs also agreed to redo his contract, but the pay cut Giants offered was not acceptable to him. It is still not know how much 49ers offered him, but different reports suggest that the amount is still not very hefty.
