Former New York Giants LB Carl Banks sees nothing wrong in Gregg Williams audio tape - NFL News
The release of an audio tape in which former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator and the brains behind the bounty scheme Gregg Williams is heard extorting his players to injure opponents has led to differing comments.
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers, defensive tackle, Warren Sapp, was shocked that someone could say such things during a team meeting.
However, for former New York Giants linebacker Carl Banks the language used in the audio recording is nothing other than normal.
The audio tape released by filmmaker and blogger Sean Pamphilon on Thursday, reveals that before the Saints divisional round game against San Francisco 49ers last season, Williams in a team meeting told the players repeatedly to target the head of 49ers
running back Frank Gore.
Williams also asks his players to try and “put a l**k” on wide receiver Kyle Williams who has a history of concussions.
Banks though believes that nothing in the tape comes as any surprise and Williams was just trying to pump up his players before the big game.
In an interview on Thursday to the New York Daily News he said.
"The tenor of the speech is not uncommon on a Saturday night before a game. Some of the stuff was over the line, but 90 to 95 percent was what you would hear within most (defensive) rooms."
Banks also did not seem shocked at some of Williams other statements in which he tells his players to “kill the head and the body will die”.
“The whole ‘kill the head, the body will follow,’ that’s a metaphor. It’s coach speak.”
Adding further he said.
“The Kyle Williams concussion thing, that’s their game. Look the goal is not to give him a concussion. See if he’s timid. See if he’s fully recovered.
“If a running back has a bad ankle, you want to hit him and see if he can cut. If he’s not effective, his coach is going to pull him out.”
Williams has been suspended by the National Football League (NFL) indefinitely for running the bounty program and the release of the audio tape will further aggravate his already slim chances of returning to coach in the league.
