Former New York Jets punter, Steve Weatherford remains unimpressed with QB Mark Sanchez
New York Jets quarterback, Mark Sanchez faced some stiff criticism by fans and his teammates last season.
Sanchez got involved in a big feud with wide receiver, Santonio Holmes last season while some teammates criticised what they called the quarterback’s lazy attitude during training.
This is the same quarterback who just two seasons ago was the toast of New York as he led the Jets to two consecutive National Football Conference (NFC) Championship games since being drafted by the team in 2009.
However, his failure to push on from those successes has been a big question mark.
In an earlier interview quarterbacks coach, Matt Cavanaugh said that Sanchez made too many mistakes last year.
He also went on to say that Sanchez’s failure to learn from his mistakes could have been due to his overconfidence after the success he had.
That same sentiment is held by former Jets punter, Steve Weatherford who is currently plying his trade with the New York Giants.
Speaking to NFL.com’s “Cover Two” podcast, Weatherford who played with Sanchez for two seasons said.
"I like Mark, I think he's a very talented quarterback, but from my standpoint, I haven't seen a lot of maturation from the position,"
Adding further he said.
"When you're a quarterback and you come in, and you're expected to be the face of the franchise, and you're expected to lead the team, that's a lot to take on as a rookie, but as the years go on, I think you're expected to mature, skill-wise, and also mature
as a leader, and to be honest with you, as much as I like the guy, I just haven't seen that."
Sanchez’s leadership skills have been called into question a lot last season and this year will be make or break for the quarterback.
The Jets have brought in Tim Tebow as backup but just a few mistakes could see Sanchez lose his starting berth to Tebow.
Head coach, Rex Ryan and general manager, Mike Tannenbaum, have maintained that Sanchez will remain the starter for the team and it is now in the quarterback’s hands to show with his performances that he deserves to keep his position.
