Reports in French media suggest that former OGC Nice right-back, Francois Clerc is on his way to sign for Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid who are willing to take their chances on the Frenchma
The career of France international Francois Clerc is most unusual. Started his career at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-Lyonnais-c40130, the right-back, joined Toulouse on loan for the 2004/2005 campaign. However, he made just seven league appearances with Les Pitchouns.
Upon he return to the middle of the Rhone and Saone rivers through the back door, Clerc found another surprise in store for him. The Frenchman’s place had been taken by Anthony Reveillere who also competed with Clerc for a place in the French national side.
In the European Championships in 2008, Clerc was a replacement for Willy Sagnol who was injured and he marshalled the right-flank. At that time, Clerc was at the height of his career and had a lot of ambitions. However, things took a whole new dimension
for the Frenchman when he injured his knee. He became a persona non grata and at the end of his contract in 2010, Lyon chose not to grant him an extension.
Since then, Clerc has become an integral part of Les Aiglons. Last campaign, Clerc had a good second half of the campaign and assured that his club avoid the drop. However, this season has been a different story altogether. Mired rock bottom in Ligue 1 standings,
Clerc’s two goals and one assist in 15 games have not pulled the club out of the dreaded relegation zone.

Reports claim that Madrid are keen on signing the player whose contract at Nice will expire by the end of the current campaign. This would certainly be a big achievement for Clerc whose career was on the precipice last summer when not a single club except
Nice was willing to take their chances on him.
