Former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-Lyonnais-c40130 coach Claude Puel loses battle against club – Ligue 1 news
Former Olympique Lyonnais coach Claude Puel has lost his hearing in which the former AS Monaco coach demanded the club to pay him 5 million Euros in damages and for the remaining term of his contract.
The French tactician’s contract with the Rhone giants was terminated in June 2011 after president Jean-Michel Aulas saw Lyon win not a single trophy during Puel’s three-year stint at the seven-time Ligue 1 champions.
The former Lyon coach had hoped to receive payment for his salaries and bonuses (3.3 million Euros) and also an additional compensation for moral damages in the region of 1.65 million Euros. However, the Labour Court of Lyon decided to give the decision
in favour of Olympique Lyonnais.
The decision comes as a surprise as many thought that the court will succumb to the demands of the coach and that Lyon would also try not to prolong the case by giving Puel what he demanded. Rather than condemning Les Gones to pay such a hefty compensation,
the Labour Court decided to side up with Olympique Lyonnais.
The decision would certainly be a delightful one for club president Jean-Michel Aulas who was clearly annoyed with the issue considering Lyon’s financial aspect is not a strong point these days.
However, Claude Puel and his lawyers might consider making an appeal for the decision which might further prolong a case that should have been sorted out well before December 2011.
On the other hand, Puel’s idea of manoeuvring and dragging the case might prove to be futile as the Frenchman certainly hasn’t delivered anything to the club during his three year stay at the Stade de Gerland.
The 50-year-old’s most notable achievement during his time at Lyon was when the Rhone giants qualified for the semifinal of the UEFA Champions League in 2010. With Lyon failing to win any trophy under the guidance of Claude Puel, Aulas sought to terminate
the Castres native’s contract and brought in Remi Garde as the new coach of the club.
At that time, Garde was the technical director at Tola Vologe, the youth academy of the club.
