Former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rashid-Latif-c84084 slams Umpire Decision Review System
Pakistan’s former captain and wicketkeeper Rashid Latif slammed the controversial Umpire Decision Review System on Monday and termed it a ‘joke’.
“The manner in which the system has been applied in the World Cup and the way decisions of the umpires have been reversed or upheld because of it indicate it is nothing but a joke,” Latif said.
Latif joined Indian skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mahendra-Singh-Dhoni-c73820 in his concerns about the accuracy of the referral system and said that the system was not serving its purpose even after the innovations made by the International Cricket Council.
Latif reckoned that without the ‘Hot Spot’ technology, the Umpire Decision Review System can never serve the purpose it is meant for as the ‘Hawk Eye’ technology does not take into account the nature of wicket while showing the trajectory
of the ball.
He further added that it is very difficult for the technology being used to consider the nature and bounce of wickets as they were different all around the world.
The former wicketkeeper batsman of Pakistan has asked the apex body to ensure the concerned boards and broadcasters had all the necessary components to make it a success.
Rashid, who is currently serving http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750-Ireland game played on Sunday at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore to support his opinion.
“In the India-Ireland match, an Irish batsman (Cusack) was given LBW after a review. Earlier, the umpire correctly turned down the appeal because the batsman was well down the track - more than 2.5 metres. To me, it was a clear-cut decision
but the hawk-eye suggested otherwise. If the wicket was of the Perth, then it would be a mind-boggling decision,” maintained Latif.
The 2.5-meter rule has received a lot of criticism which led to the International Cricket Council altering the rule on Monday. Earlier, as per the 2.5-meter rule, the on-field umpire could have reversed the leg-before decision only if the
ball was hitting the centre of the middle stump. But as per the altered rule, the on-field umpire can reverse the decision if the ball is hitting the middle stump anywhere.
So far, India are the only side to oppose the use of technology in the World Cup however, most of the Test playing countries have backed the innovated Decision Review System.
