Former Phoenix Suns centre Oliver Miller pleads guilty on assault charges: NBA News
Former NBA star Oliver Miller pleaded guilty on Tuesday, November 1, for pistol butting a man last April.
On April 2011, former Phoenix Suns centre Miller stabbed his girlfriend’s brother in law Jason Worley in the head and face outside the latter’s house. In what was a family argument, Miller was further charged with first and second degree assault, possessing a hand gun, reckless endangerment and using the weapon in a violent crime. The reason of personal conflict between the two men was not specified.
Jason Worley received severe injuries and a concussion after he was whipped brutally by a hand gun.
The incident occurred during a family barbecue in Arnold, Maryland. It was reported that Miller and Jason had a heated discussion during the family gathering and later Oliver Miller followed Worley outside the house. According to the reports, three people saw Miller beating Jason Worley around 8 p.m.in front of the victim’s house.
Oliver Miller, who was nicknamed as ‘The Big O’ during his nine years of NBA career, admitted the crime in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court for both, felony assault and possessing an illegal weapon. The next hearing is scheduled to take place on 16th December in Annapolis where he will be sentenced for his crime.
Considering state’s guidelines for such act, it is expected that Oliver Miller will receive the prison sentence between four to nine years.
The Circuit Court Judge Paul A. Hackner declared that he will give an option to Oliver Miller to withdraw the guilty plea if he believes that more than 18 months of County jail sentence is justified. Miller’s attorney Paul Mack refused to make any comment regarding the plea and further development on the case will become apparent after the next hearing.
The 41-year-old Oliver Miller was drafted by the Phoenix Suns as the 22nd overall pick during the 1992 NBA Draft. The big man played in various NBA teams in his basketball career which include Phoenix Suns, Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks. In the final stages of his NBA career, Miller signed with Indiana Pacers during the 2002 pre-season, however he was waived by the franchise before the regular season games started.
