Former Pittsburgh Steelers backup QB Troy Smith still hopeful of pro career success – NFL News
A number of teams have approached backup quarterback, Troy Smith, with an interest for exploring his hiring since his release by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and this brings the former Heisman Trophy winner again on the prospects of getting another shot at the
National Football League (NFL) career.
Troy, who himself disclosed information of being contacted by the teams, has not named any of them.
He and some officials from the league are hopeful of his pro career prospects and success.
He said of the situation:
“We'll just keep plugging and plugging."
Meanwhile, Baltimore Ravens’ general manager, Ozzie Newsome, is quite optimistic about the player’s chances in finding another team in the league.
Irrespective of the optimism, the entire situation about his NFL future remains limited to the talk of interest only, and getting a deal from any team in the league just in the face of training camp might not be so convenient for him.
One of the main problems that almost all teams face is that they are well above the prescribed post-training camp players’ strength on their rosters.
Soon after the camps, which are expected to close down by third week of August as maximum, the teams will have to cut short the number of players on the roster to 53 maximum.
It is unfortunate for Smith to make an unceremonious departure from Steelers just when the teams are preparing to launch their next season campaigns.
In his case this is nothing new, though, given he has been going places during his entire brief NFL career. He worked out for Dolphins in August last year but despite being told of signing, it never happened.
Smith is one of the few unlucky players who despite being very successful in college league struggle for stability and consistency in their pro careers.
Former Houston Texans’ quarterback, Matt Leinart, is another player to be through almost similar situation. His case is even more rueful as he has also been confronting injury problems on a regular basis in the pro career.
He returned to play for Texans in 2011 as a replacement for injured Matt Schaub, the incumbent veteran QB, and could manage play of only half hour before being ruled out of the season with a Collarbone.
