Former Rangers star says big guns will soon come calling for Steven Naismith
Former Rangers player Mark Walters says that the club have a fight on their hands to keep hold of Steven Naismith.
Naismith has been in fine form for the Scottish Premier League champions this season, having scored 7 goals in 14 games across all competitions.
That statistic does not tell the entire story, however, as he scored a crucial winner against Bursaspor in the UEFA Champions League while he shone against Spanish outfit Valencia.
Naismith — who had a trial with EPL giants Arsenal under Arsene Wenger as a youngster — has also scored winning goals against Heart of Midlothian and Kilmarnock this season.
As a result of his recent performances, several English Premier League outfits are said to be keen on the Scotland international, including Liverpool. With Rangers currently in dire financial straits, they may be forced to sell one of their main assets when
the transfer window reopens in January and Naismith may be on the move.
'More space to play in Champions League'
Walters, who won three league titles with Rangers between 1987 and 1991, told reporters that: "Steven has been very good and looked accomplished in linking both defence and attack. He has done very well in the Champions League and those games are probably a
little bit easier for him in the sense there is more space.
"In the SPL it's often tight and teams close Rangers down. That makes it a bit more difficult for him to get on the ball.
"The Champions League has to be the benchmark. If you can play in those big games — and Valencia are one of the best in Europe — you should be able to do it in the Premiership.
"Wenger is one of the best coaches in the world and for him to see something in Steven shows the ability he has. I reckon it's inevitable Premiership teams will look at him. When you're at Rangers you are in the shop window.”
The 24-year-old moved to the Ibrox club from fellow SPL side Kilmarnock in August 2007 for a fee of around £1.9m.
