Former Sharks lock Gerhard Mostert signs new deal with Stade Francais – Rugby news
South African Super Rugby franchise Sharks’, Gerhard Mostert, has signed a new contract with the French Top14 side Stade Francais. Reports are that the Sharks have agreed to release the Mostert from his previous contract and will allow the athletic lock
to join Stade Francais in the start of 2011/12 Top 14 season.
Mostert has confirmed the signing of the deal with the Paris based French Professional Rugby Union club Stade Francais in an interview on Thursday, July 7. He said, “They (Stade Francais) are a big club in France and have been successful over the years in
winning Cups. Paris is a great city and I'm looking forward to moving over.
Stade Francais will welcome the signing of the talented lock following the off field controversies surrounding the club. For the past couple of months, Stade Francais have been in the news with respect to their financial problems, Top 14 relegation threats,
change in management, resurfacing of relegation threats, dramatically finding money to save their Top 14 berth, announcement of the new management and lastly the controversy related to the club’s co-president.
Rustenburg born lock Mostert has expressed his delight on signing his new contract with the Stade Francais. He added that he always wanted to play and compete with teams in the Northern Hemisphere.
Mostert termed his new contract as a perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire. He said, “I'm really looking forward to the new challenge that awaits me in playing for Stade Francais.”
6 feet 6 inches tall, Mostert has thanked Sharks management and coaching staff for their support during his stay at the club. Mostert missed most of the 2010 Super Rugby season due to injury. He said, “I would like to thank the Sharks for their support over
the last two years and for agreeing to my early release. They have been very good to me and I will not forget it.”
Mostert started his professional rugby union career with the Lions in the 2006 season. At the end of the 2009 season, he signed a deal with the Sharks.
In addition to Mostert, Stade Francais has already announced the signing of Paul Williams, Felipe Contempomi, David Lyons, Anton van Zyl, Morgan Turinui Byron Kelleher, Aled de Malmanche and Paul Sackey to strengthen their squad for next Top 14 season.
