Former Sri Lanka captain Hashan Tillakaratne fails to name players involved in match-fixing
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758’s former captain Hashan Tillakaratne has failed to provide the names of the players whom he alleged of being involved in match-fixing in front of the Western Provincial Council meeting.
Earlier, he had pledged to disclose the names of the Sri Lankan players who were involved in match-fixing. However, he insisted that he had been advised by his legal counsel not to disclose the names of the culprits at this point in time.
In the meeting he said, “I am confident of my allegations as there were many players in the international cricket arena who were under surveillance during the post 1992 period.”
He reiterated that in the coming days he will share the crucial evidence with the International Cricket Council and the Western Provincial Council. Hashan’s revelations about the existence of match-fixing in Sri Lankan cricket have drawn mixed reactions
as there are many in the country who have openly challenged his claims and want him to give solid proof to his accusations.
Sri Lanka’s former skipper Kumar Sangakkara has also shown his dismay at the recent claims by Hashan and believes that these allegations will damage the image of the game in the world and Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage has requested the local police to initiate an inquiry into the whole debacle to judge whether the allegations are real or not. The minister believes that the accusations without substantial
evidence will harm cricket in Sri Lanka.
On the other hand, Hashan insisted that by making the claims of existence of corruption in Sri Lanka cricket he does not aim to achieve any political gains but in fact wants to eradicate the menace from the game which he has always cherished.
According to the former cricketer, the game has evolved a lot and with the introduction of the Twenty20 version of the game, new formats of fixing have also come into existence. He pointed out that “spot-fixing” was the latest addition to the corruption
in cricket which is the most difficult to detect, making it very easy for the players to elude their fans and cricket authorities.
Hashan criticised the Sri Lankan Cricket and accused it of being the main reason behind corruption going rampage. He advised the SLC to fix things within their own organisation first to root out the menace of match-fixing.
