Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara criticises appointment of Duncan Fletcher as India coach
Sri Lanka’s Test captain Kumar Sangakkara has criticised the Board of Control for Cricket in India for appointing former Zimbabwean captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Duncan-c54739 Fletcher as the new coach of the Men in Blue.
The left hander feels that cricket authorities in India should have gone for a local coach because they are a big Test playing nation and have produced a number of great players in past.
The BCCI appointed Fletcher as the new coach of the national team recently after http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gary-Kirsten-c58527 decided to call it a day after a successful ICC World Cup 2011 campaign. Fletcher was also the coach of the England team for a long time in the previous decade and helped the Poms regain the Ashes after 18 years along with captain Michael Vaughan.
The wicketkeeper, who is currently leading Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League, said that http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 have produced many great cricketers in past and it was a pity that the BCCI could not find a good coach within the country. He further added that just like players, a national coach should be preferred.
Sangakkara said, “Having produced some many good cricketers in the region, it is a shame that no suitable candidate was found competent to take over the national side. It is important that home grown coaching ability and talent is exploited to the fullest like home grown playing talent and ability.”
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758’s Test captain added that it is never easy for any cricket board to find a good coach. He feels that the majority of the people in his country want to see someone as coach who is a Sri Lankan.
“Finding a good coach is the most difficult hurdle that any board would face. Those are difficult choices and from a Sri Lankan perspective everybody would like to have a Sri Lankan as the coach of the national team,” the wicketkeeper added.
The appointment of Fletcher as the coach of the national side has been a hot debate in the Indian media but only time will tell whether the decision of the BCCI was correct or not.
