Former Stormers and Western Province’s lock Adriaan Fondse signs for Newcastle Falcons – Rugby News
Newcastle Falcons 2011/12 season received a major boost with the arrival of the South African professional Rugby Union player, Adriaan Fondse, to the club. Officials at the club have confirmed
the signing of Fondse in a statement released on their website on Saturday, November 5.
Fondse will arrive at the Newcastle based Aviva Premiership outfit, Falcons, from the South African Super Rugby franchise, Stormers and South African provincial domestic Rugby Union outfit,
Western Provinces.  
Fondse is considered one of the finest second row forwards in the game. His arrival at Falcons will definitely add depth to their locks resources and given them options in the second row in
both domestic and European competitions.
Fondse is Afrikaans High School for Boys product. He attended the school with the likes of Rugby Union's established players including Pierre Spies, Wynand Olivier, Derick Kuun Jacques-Louis
Potgieter, Fourie du Preez and Cliff Milton.
Pretoria born Fondse started his professional senior club career with the Stormers in 2008. Later the same year he made his Currie Cup debut for Western Provinces.  He so far has made 30 Super
Rugby appearances. He also has represented Western Provinces in 34 South African Provincial domestic games and scored 30 points for them.
The 28-year-old Fondse has expressed his delight on his new professional deal with the Falcons, which has provided him an opportunity to play and compete in the Northern Hemisphere. He added,
“I definitely want to be involved in something big at the club.”
Fondse further added, “I am really looking forward to the challenge of playing for the Falcons.  The Falcons are an ambitious club that wants to go places and I am really pleased to have the
opportunity to move to Newcastle.”
Fondse will not feel alienated at Newcastle Falcons, as the club has recruited number of the South African Rugby Union player for their 2011/12 campaign. This includes the likes of Corne Uys.
Uys played with Fondse in Western Provinces.
Uys has praised Fondse’s rugby skills and abilities and expressed his confidence that he will do good in the season. He said, “Adriaan is a big physical man and he is a great signing for the
club. He is a good ball carrier who works really hard for the team and as a person he is a nice guy - you could say he is a gentle giant.”
