Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Alvin McCants arrested again for cocaine possession
Alvin Keith McCants, former linebacker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was arrested and booked into Pinellas County Jail in Largo, Florida on Saturday 23 April, 2011. The player was arrested on charges of possession of a banned substance, cocaine.
Jail records show that McCants was also arrested for resisting an officer, with bail set at $3,500 for cocaine possession and $500 for resisting an officer, a total of $4,000. McCants is also being held for failure to appear on a controlled substance charge
in Mobile, Alabama. His address on the jail website was listed in St. Petersburg, Florida, but there was no phone number available to seek any comments.
This is not the first time that McCants has had trouble with the law. In February 2008, McCants was arrested and charged in Mobile for possession of drug paraphernalia and loitering for the purpose of drug activity. He was released after posting bond.
He was convicted in October, the same year, for one year of formal probation and admitted in a substance abuse program. McCants was again arrested, six days after the conviction, for failing to appear in court in relation to the charges.
In November of 2009, McCants was arrested for driving without insurance and began serving a ten day sentence in March of 2008 instead of paying the $610 fine.
Just a few days after being released from prison on the ‘driving without insurance’ charge, McCants was once again arrested. This time in Prichard, Alabama, for possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and loitering. McCants had to be Taser'd after
he threw several objects, including a screwdriver, crack pipe and a pair of pliers at a police officer, nearly hitting him on the head.
He was then arrested once again in Mobile in December of 2009 for possession of drug paraphernalia and loitering for the purpose of drug activity. Less than six months later, in May of 2010, he was arrested for trying to buy drugs at a hotel in Mobile on
20 April. Less than a month after that, he was arrested for possession and use of drug paraphernalia. McCants was also arrested in St. Petersburg for cocaine possession on 8 December, 2010 with his 23 April arrest occurring in the same place on the same charges.
McCants was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round, overall pick number four, of the 1990 National Football League (NFL) Draft out of the University of Alabama. However, the Bucs were not aware that McCants had sustained a serious knee injury
which led to his early retirement in 1995. McCants played for the Bucs for three seasons and then joined the Houston Oilers for two years before retiring with the Arizona Cardinals after two years with them.
