Former Tampa Bay Rays designated hitter Johnny Damon could join Detroit Tigers
Reports are coming in the media that former Tampa Bay Rays’ designated hitter and current free agent Johnny Damon possibly will sign with the Detroit Tigers in next few weeks.
Recently, some renowned sports websites have published some reports that the Tigers management is also looking very optimistic to sign Damon for next potential seasons.
Jon Paul Morosi, who works in local sports’ media, stated in detail about every aspect of Damon’s game and why the Tigers should be pursuing for him.
Morosi said, “And they should. He can hit in a number of line-up spots, which suits them well because Jim Leyland is still sorting through a number of line-up options. Is Prince Fielder the dream scenario? Of course he is, the perfect complement to Cabrera is a left-handed slugger who can hit 50 bombs.”
He added, “But I don’t think either Fielder or Cabrera wants to be a full-time. I expect him to put up big numbers in his contract year. He can play left field, first and DH. I do believe the Tigers will add one more pitcher, via trade or free agency.”
The Tigers have also recently lost Victor Martinez for the next whole season and that is also the main reason why they would like Johnny Damon to be fulfilling the gap in the batting order which needs to be improving further for better results next season where every MLB team would be coming with great preparation.
Looking at Damon’s stats, who has been playing in the Major League for past 17 seasons, achieving hitting .286 with 231 homers and consistent ball play, certainly possesses some huge baseball talents. He has also played for the Tigers back in 2010, batting .271 with eight homers and 36 doubles, but eventually traded to Rays last season where he hit .261 with 16 homers and 29 doubles.
However, the Tigers have also showed interest in pitcher Roy Oswalt, whose past record 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA for the Philadelphia Phillies was recognised by many critics. Both these players have huge chance to play for the Tigers next season and if it happens, the Tigers offence will be tough to beat.
