Former Tennessee Titans’ coach Jeff Fisher and St. Louis Rams close to joining hands – NFL Update
Former Tennessee Titans’ head coach, Jeff Fisher, and the St. Louis Rams might end up signing a contract as early as this weekend, Howard Balzer of
101 ESPN reported while citing a source on Friday, January 6, 2012.
Fisher has been considered as the most favourable candidate to take up the responsibility as Rams’ head coach after the dismissal of Steve Spagnuolo, nearly a week ago.
Rams’ chief operating officer, Kevin Demoff, had earlier acknowledged that the Rams would want Fisher to become their head coach and are expected to be signing a deal in the upcoming days.
“I think for everybody else that is going through the search, he is someone who is a potentially attractive candidate”, Demoff said about Fisher.
The Rams fired Spag and general manager, Billy Devaney, after a dreadful season in which the team could only get two victories.
The Rams interviewed different candidates including Arizona Cardinals’ defensive coordinator, Ray Horton, to ensure they selected the right candidate.
As per the report, nothing is finalised yet. No word has been received from Fisher, who has also got an offer to coach the Miami Dolphins' team.
Fisher had a meeting with Rams’ owner, Stan Kroenke, on Thursday, a couple of days after he met the Miami management.
As per the source, Fisher could choose the Rams due to a number of reasons.
The Rams have the second pick in the upcoming National Football League (NFL) draft, along with, their opponents next season are already determined, while the National Football Conference (NFC) West division is not as competent as the Dolphins’ American Football
Conference (AFC) East.
This could provide Fisher an opportunity to select new talent in the drafts and utilise it for improving Rams’ image with less competitive teams around.
Moreover, Rams have not yet selected any general manager yet. If Fisher joins hands with the Rams, he might also get an opportunity to play a role in the selection of a new GM.
All these factors favour Fisher, who has been serving as a head coach for more than a decade now.
After firing the previous personnel, the Rams management had said that it would reach a decision to appoint new people within a couple of days. However, they might sign Fisher and stop their hunt within a week.
