Former Tiger Anibal Sanchez seeks $90 million contract – MLB Update
According to a leading sports website, former Detroit Tigers’ starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez is seeking a contract worth $90 million. Sanchez, who ended the 2012 season on an extremely strong note, has increased his free agent worth considerably.
His post-season performances including (1.77 ERA in three games), in particular, impressed everyone in Major League Baseball. The right hander, who helped the Tigers win several important encounters last season, is asking teams for a contract in the range
of $90 million and six years, the source claimed.
If Sanchez manages to secure such a deal, he will be making $15 million on a yearly basis. It is what C.J. Wilson received as baseball’s best pitcher when he hit the open market last offseason. Wilson ended up signing a $77.5 million five year contract with
the Los Angeles Angels and it will be interesting to see if Sanchez can also grab a contract in that range.
"Do I think it helps that we had Sanchez (this year)? My answer would be yes," general manager Dave Dombrowski said at the annual state of the Tigers address. "But I'm also practical enough to know that in other ways, no, because when you get to this point,
probably offers being equal, it helps you.”
He added, "Offers that blow you away, it doesn't really make much difference and really what ends up happening is you've been through this process before, it's the player's right, they can do what they want.”
After posting one of the best seasons of his career last year, Sanchez has become the hottest property in baseball these days. In addition to his former team Detroit Tigers, the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers and the Boston Red Sox
have also shown great interesting in signing him on.
Short on budget, the Tigers will surely struggle to meet Sanchez demands. It is not clear if other teams could meet the $90 million price tag. However, considering the industry health, his performances in the last season and the amount of interest shown
by the teams, it will not be surprise if he could sign for more than expected.
It will be interesting to see which team can afford to sign Sanchez with such a high priced contract for next season.
