Former Tottenham striker Gerry Armstrong: No Jose Mourinho at Manchester United in immediate future
Former Tottenham Hotspur striker, Gerry Armstrong, has claimed that FIFA Coach of the Year, Jose Mourinho, will not be taking charge of English Premier League giants Manchester United at the end of the season. Armstrong’s comments come in the wake of increasing speculation that ‘the Special One’ will take over the reins of Manchester United when legendary Sir Alex Ferguson finally decides to retire.
Ferguson is the most successful manager in the history of the Premier League, and he is on track to reach yet another milestone with the Red Devils this season by helping them become the first side in England to win 19 League titles. Aside from that phenomenal achievement, United are also through to the final of UEFA Champions League. It is an amazing feat, especially when you consider that the current Manchester United squad is arguably the weakest in recent memory.
It is no secret that the enigmatic Jose Mourinho wants to be the manager of Manchester United at some point in his career. The Portuguese has been after the job for quite some time now. While he is currently under contract with Spanish giants Real Madrid, Mourinho is far from happy with his time at Santiago Bernabeu. A rift has formed between him and the club owner, leading to reports that he might be on his way to the Premier League after the end of the current La Liga season.
However, former Tottenham Hotspur striker Gerry Armstrong believes that ‘the Special One’ will not be taking charge of Manchester United anytime soon. Armstrong believes that Mourinho will bide his time before accepting the job.
Speaking on the matter, the Spurs legend said, “He's a clever man, Jose Mourinho. You should never underestimate him. He doesn't want to be the next manager of Manchester United because he thinks the next manager of Manchester United is going to fail. So he wants to be the manager after the next manager.”
He added, “That's a bit of knowledge from a year ago when he was still at Inter Milan."
It seems that not even an ego as large as Mourinho’s will be enough to fill the void left by Sir Alex’s departure from Old Trafford.
