Former Toulon Winger Paul Sackey confirms that he is negotiating a new deal – Rugby news
Former Toulon winger Paul Sackey has confirmed on Wednesday, May 25, that he is close to signing a new deal with a new club.
Sackey further added that he and his new club have made the initial negotiations on the contract and the announcement will be made in a couple of days. He said, “The deal is near enough done, but I don't want to jump the gun." He further
added that he cannot disclose the club's and contract details right now.
On May 25, Sackey had been named to the Barbarians starting line-up for their May 29 clash against the England at Twickenham. Paul Sackey was fired by the French Top 14 side Toulon’s President Mourad Boudjellal on May 10. Sackey had signed a two-year deal
with Toulon but failed to impress the management.
Mourad Boudjellal announced the termination of Sackey’s contract in a news conference. He said, “Since he (Sackey) did not give satisfaction, we have decided to release him.”
Commenting on his stay at the Toulon, Sackey said, “It wasn't tough in Toulon, I had a few family issues earlier on but then I loved it and I have some really good friends there.” He further added the termination in the contract has proved to be a blessing
in disguise for him.
The 31-year-old winger has made appearances for several England Union rugby teams including Barbarians, Bedford Blues, London Irish, London Wasps and lastly Toulon. Sackey made his professional rugby union debut for the Bedford Blues in 1999. He made 17
appearances for Blues and scored 40 points that included eight tries.
At the start of the 2000/01 season, Sackey joined the London Irish and remained with them until the end of the 2004/05 season. He scored 30 for Irish in 88 appearances. In 2005, he joined London Wasps and remained with them until he signed a two-year deal
with Toulon in 2009. He played 80 games for Wasps and scored 30 tries. London Born Sackey made his international debut for England against New Zealand in 2006. He has so far played 22 tests and has scored 55 points.
Sackey has ruled out his own chances of making it to Martin Johnson’s England squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He further added that his performance in the Twickenham clash will make no difference to his future in England’s national rugby side. He said,
“I scored a couple of tries for the Barbarians last year, but it didn't make a difference to England. I'm not counting on anything."
His announcement is expected anytime next week.
