Former Vice President of European Athletics, Dr. Agoston Schulek passes away – Athletics news
Dr. Agoston Schulek, the former Vice President of European Athletics has passed away at the age of 68 years. Schulek, a veteran administrative, served at his above mentioned post for twelve long years. He took charge of his office back in 1995, and remained
in the saddle until 2007.
While acknowledging his services in taking athletics to new heights in Europe, Dr. Schulek was named as an honorary member of the European Athletics Council in 2008 (after his retirement from the post of vice president).
Schulek, born in 1943, belonged to an extended family and had seven siblings. Realising his aptitude, he had developed a likeness for athletics from a tender age. Later on, while joining the sport practically, he earned his name in Pole Vault. While being
at the apex of his career, he won three national titles and broke the Hungarian national record at seven different occasions.
During his athletics career, he had had the privilege of representing Hungary at the international level for no less than 15 times. Back in 1970, while appearing at the European Indoor Championships, he finished the contest for a ninth position.
Even after retirement, he did not allow his passion for athletics to go down and remained there in the sport, albeit, this time in capacity of a coach, educator, administrator and scholar. The veteran athlete, today, is not only remembered for his achievements
but also for his friendly and helping nature. He has always been an empathiser and an optimistic demeanour.
Besides continuing and building on with his athletics career, Schulek also remain engaged in teaching work and worked an Associate Professor at the Semmelweiss University Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences. Later on, considering the skill level
he possessed and his acumen for sports, particular for athletics, he was promoted to the position of Vice Rector of the University.
In 2000, besides taking a career of his sports related activities, he joined the Szent Istvan University’s Physical Education Department. The honourable professor was also a member of the Hungarian Olympic Committee’s member of presidency since 1991, and
remained in the seat until 2001. He was handed over with the post again in 2009, to which he served until his death.
