Former Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis wished to play alongside Tom Brady – NFL News
As running back Clinton Portis announced his retirement on Thursday, August 23, 2012, he did what was expected after he had spent an entire season without a team.
Portis did share some of his thoughts about life afterwards and the things he wished he could have had in his career.
Most importantly, Portis revealed that of all the teams he trailed with, it was New England Patriots which he really wanted to play for. And his stance was backed up with a very considerable reason.
Portis was the guest in “NFL AM” in the morning of Friday, August 24. He said:
"You know, when I went on my visits, besides New England, I really wasn't excited or felt as if I was a fit into an organization. But you know, just the opportunity to play with Tom Brady was so exciting that you hope it worked.”
After finishing the 2010 season on the injured reserves, Portis was released by Redskins in the 2011 offseason before the lockout.
Many teams showed interest as the two-time Pro Bowler became a free agent. He did some work out with Patriots as well as Seattle Seahawks in August last year, but the matter did not go further.
After that, Portis was tried by Cincinnati Bengals in September. Again, the talk between the franchise and Portis’ agent ended up in vain.
Portis then spent the rest of the season as a free agent. Talking about those desperate times, Portis said:
"I think I realized, when I first left, that I was ready to walk away. I think the desire to play again was just to prove people wrong. (Prove) that I could still play. After I finally proved it to myself, and realized I was back and I could do everything,
I was totally fine with walking away a long time ago."
Denver Broncos drafted Portis in the second round (51st overall pick) of the 2002 draft. His days at Broncos were not that impressive. He left Broncos after playing two seasons with them and joined Washington Redskins in the 2004 offseason.
Portis had a phenomenal time at Redskins and he is considered one of their best players. He played seven seasons with them.
