Former Washington Redskins star QB Joe Theismann excited to see Robert Griffin III – NFL News
The arrival of quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) in Washington as the second overall pick of this year’s draft has thrilled everyone who is a Redskins fan.
Everyone is waiting to see the magic of the rookie and Redskins’ former star quarterback Joe Theismann is also among the excited fans anxiously waiting for the season to start so as to see the rookie representing their team on the field.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Theismann told ESPN 980:
"I’m excited to do the preseason games and watch him grow on a week-to-week basis as they get ready to go to New Orleans for the home opener."
Theismann represented the Redskins from 1974 to 1985. In his career, he got two Pro Bowl selections, two All-Pro selections and many other honours apart from winning the Super Bowl XVII.
In total, Theismann has more than 25,000 passing yards to his credit while he has also scored more than 150 touchdowns.
Theismann is certainly impressed with RG3 as he thinks that the rookie has superb work ethics. He said:
“The biggest thing about him, is he is as advertised--he is a bright, humble, hardworking young man. There is a desire to work and he understands that being the quarterback, he is going to automatically be the leader of this football team."
Meanwhile, Theismann has also cautioned RG3 that he is going to face tougher opponents in the professional league as compared to the college league.
RG3 is fond of rushing and it is a surprising and rare trait of a quarterback as most of them generally prefer utilising their throws to gain more yards. Although the rookie’s ability to run can be beneficial to the team, this makes him vulnerable and prone
to receiving more hits.
Theismann has urged the rookie to protect his body while adopting the running game. He said:
“The National Football League has a tough time dealing with running quarterbacks because you don’t defend that position.”
He added:
“But you still have to figure out ways to keep yourself protected and healthy.”
Redskins will play their first game of the 2012 regular season on September 09.
