Former Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker wishes to emulate legendary Arsenal defender Tony Adams. The centre back recently signed with the English Premier League outfit Arsenal after being continuously linked with the Gunners during the summer. The
towering defender is set to make his debut for the club on Saturday, September 10, against Swansea.
Mertesacker has expressed his delight at the transfer and has vowed to justify his worth in front of the Emirates officials. He is expected to help Arsenal overcome their defensive woes especially after their 8-2 drubbing at the hands of Manchester United.
The Gunners are winless so far this season, having lost to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 and United, while their opening game against Newcastle United ended in a 0-0 draw.
The 26-year-old wants to follow in the footsteps of the former Gunners centre-back, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 to four league titles. Mertesacker reckons that there is nothing to panic about and the club can still come out of this turbulent phase.

While talking to the local press, the centre back further added, "We didn't get many pictures of him on the television, but Adams was a legend here. He is a special one for me.  When I was looking at English football I always looked to Arsenal and he was
one of the great defenders when I was 10 or 12 years old. I like the players [like Adams] very much - I have enjoyed seeing them over the years.  I hope I can improve my performances here and get better and better - I want to be useful for the team."
Mertesacker spent five years at Bremen (2006-2011), netting 12 goals from 147 league appearances. The player earned his http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904 debut in 2004 and has a solitary goal to his name so far from 76 international caps.
