Former boxing champion Hector Camacho facing child abuse accusations – Boxing News
Former boxing champion Hector Camacho, nicknamed Hector, has been taken into custody by Florida authorities against accusations of child abuse. The incident took place earlier this week against a warrant that was filed in 2011.
Currently, the boxer is on bail after filing a $5,000 bond at the Orange County Jail in Orlando on Monday. Danielle Tavernier, spokesman of the state attorney, said that the office had received the complain in May. When asked, she said that no further information could be given out as the file, which has all the records, was not available at the time. However, the warrant on which the pugilist surrendered shows that the complaint was filed back in November last year.
On the other hand, Linda George, Camacho’s lawyer, released a statement clarifying her client’s stance. She said that the arrest was made on the basis of a family dispute that occurred at the residence of Camacho’s children. She added that police was called up by the neighbours since the dispute involved yelling outside the premises of their house. She further said that police did not arrest the pugilist immediately and no injuries were recorded as well.
Her statement read, “Sometime after leaving the home, the complaint was filed alleging the actions against Mr. Camacho's teenage son. Mr. Camacho only recently learned of the complaint and accordingly voluntarily reported to officials so that this matter can be resolved. He maintains a good relationship with his sons and all would like to put this matter behind.
Camacho, who won the super lightweight, junior welterweight and lightweight titles back in the 80s, fought his last bout against Oscar De La Hoya in 1997 and lost via unanimous decision. Since then, the pugilist has been living a retired life. His career portfolio has 79 wins, 5 losses and 3 ties.
Even though Camacho has been a world-renowned fighter, he has always been found involved in drug, alcohol and other severe issues. Back in 2007, the boxer was sentenced 7 years of jail time for entering a computer store in Mississippi illegally. Police had also found ecstasy (the drug) with Camacho at the time of his arrest which further reduced his chance of winning the case.
