Former champion Alan Jones to work as race steward for 2011 Japanese GP – Formula 1 news
Former Formula 1 champion Alan Jones will be participating in the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix as the race steward.
The race is scheduled for this weekend, October 7-9, 2011 at the Suzuka circuit in Japan.
Jones, winner of 12 grands prix, is excited at his return to Formula 1.
“I'm looking forward to being the guest steward in Japan,” said Alan speaking to Speedcafe.com.
The Australian will be joined by International Automobile Federation (FIA) representative Garry Connelly and FIA vice-president Gary Abed on the stewards’ panel.
Jones will be in a better position to advise the teams on the track as he has a good understanding of the latter as well as an experience of driving a Formula 1 car.
He said, “Compared to someone who hasn't raced a car, I think I'm probably better equipped to decide whether it was a driver mistake or a deliberate incident.”
Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing currently tops the 2011 Formula 1 drivers’ championship standings and needs just one point to clinch this season’s championship and become the youngest Formula 1 driver with two consecutive victories.
Right now, the only driver who can mathematically challenge the German is McLaren’s Jenson Button who sits in the second position as of now with 185 points.
Right behind him is Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso at 184 points. The Spaniard has recently announced that he understands that winning the championship will not be possible for him now and thus he is aiming for a runners-up position for which he will try his
best.
The high-speed Suzuka racetrack is a favourite among the Formula 1 teams who are all very excited to drive at this circuit.
All the teams will try to steal the show by performing to the best of their abilities.
The upcoming race in Japan starts this weekend at the Suzuka circuit.
Let’s see how Jones’ selection as one of the race stewards turns out to be and how the teams fare at this race.
