Former champion Damon Hill gets to drive a Formula 1 car again – Formula 1 news
Damon Hill, former title winner, got the opportunity to drive a Formula 1 car again at Barcelona this Sunday.
Hill had retired from the sport after driving for the last time at the Japanese Grand Prix in 1999. He enjoyed driving the Red Bull car RB6 which the team had produced in 2010. He was in Barcelona to watch his son race in the Formula Renault Euro cup.
“I spoke to Renault and said I'd be coming down because Josh was racing, and it kind of snowballed from there and I've ended up driving the Red Bull,” Hill told Autosport. “You can't really say no to that, can you? So a big thanks to Renault and Red Bull.”
Hill’s former teammate of the time when he used to race for the Williams F1 team, Alain Prost, also had the chance of driving the same car in September. He said that Prost had competed when the cars had been quite different but he himself did not find much
change.
“Things like the hand clutch were already on the Jordan by then. The cars have changed subtly, but fundamentally they are the same. It's not a competition, there's no challenge, and I'm not being tested. It's purely for my own experience and it's fun,” Hill
said.
The former driver was really pleased with Red Bull that they have been holding these demonstrations. He said that they have been able to gather huge crowds, many of whom do not even follow Formula 1. He admits that such events make the sport popular among
such people and makes them want to follow it more.
He confessed that it is very difficult to refuse to such an opportunity and is very thankful to Red Bull for giving it to him.
Hill, along with his father Graham Hill, are the only father-son duo in Formula 1 to have won world championships. Graham Hill died in a plane crash while Damon was just 15. He had first started his career in racing in 1981 through Motorbike competitions.
He lost his chance for a title in 1994 when his rival Michael Schumacher won by single point. Hill finally succeeded in winning his title in 1996.
