Former champion Michael Schumacher voted as greatest German sportsman of all time – Formula 1 news
Seven-time Formula 1 world champion, Mercedes GP driver Michael Schumacher has been voted by the Germans as the best sportsman of the country of all time.
Schumacher has won seven Formula 1 championships in his 18-year long career in the sport. He won 5 championships with Ferrari in 5 years consecutively from 2000-2004 while the rest of the two championships were won by him back in 1994 and 1995 with Team
Benetton which was headed by Flavio Briatore- the mastermind behind Renault’s success as well.
The German legend was supported by Jean Todt and Ross Brawn during his championship run with Ferrari which is the longest championship reign in the history of the sport.
Michael has 91 race victories under his belt with 154 podium positions in 274 race starts which means that he has a podium scoring percentage of around 56 percent. It means that out of every two races on average, Schumacher scores a podium in at least one
of them.
Other than that, he has scored 68 pole positions so far in his career which is quite less than his race wins which means that Schumacher is more of a racing driver rather than a fast pace setting driver.
Many other well-known German sports figures were included in this pole including the 2010 Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel, Basketball player Dirk Nowitzki and football legend Franz Beckenbauer.
Michael Schumacher however dominated the poll with 28 percent of the votes out of a total of 56,000 votes. His closest rival was Franz Beckenbauer who received almost 13 percent of the votes while Nowitzki received 12.4 percent of the votes approximately.
Schumacher has scored many records in Formula 1 including the most race wins scoring driver, most pole positions scoring, most championships winning driver to name a few.
The German driver is currently driving for Mercedes GP but is struggling massively as he has not scored a single podium since his return in 2010 with the team. However, he is willing to continue with the team and probably improve their performance until
they become a race winning team.
