Former cornerback R.W. Williams shot in back in Tulsa, Oklahoma
Former National Football League (NFL) cornerback Robert William McQuarters, more commonly known as R.W. McQuarters, was shot in the back after leaving a friend’s house in his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Police say that McQuarters had just left his friend’s house in north Tulsa on Saturday 30 April, 2011 and got into his vehicle. He started to drive away when he was approached by a man wearing a ski mask. The man then opened fire on him, hitting him once
in the upper back.
A local newspaper in Tulsa cited a police source that said that his McQuarters’ injuries were not considered to be life threatening. A television station also supported the claim when it said that McQuarters had driven himself to the hospital.
The 34-year old cornerback was drafted 28th overall in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State University by the San Francisco 49ers. During his career at Oklahoma State, he was known as one of college football’s most versatile
players, spending time as kick returner, wide receiver and defensive back.
As a junior, he started nine games as a wide receiver and finished his college career with eight catches for 245 receiving yards and two touchdowns, averaging 30.6 yards per reception. He also rushed twice for 69 yards and one touchdown.
Nationally, McQuarters ranked second in punt returns while setting a school record of 32 punt returns for 521 yards and one touchdown, an average of 16.3 yards per punt return. He also had eight kickoff returns that he returned for 195 yards, averaging 24.4
yards per kickoff return.
He was signed to the Niners by former Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci, who was head coach of the Niners at the time. When Mariucci went to Detroit, he signed McQuarters as a free agent.
McQuarters played for the Niners for two seasons before going to the Chicago Bears for five seasons, from 2000 to 2004. He then spent one year with the Lions before joining the New York Giants in 2006 and staying with them for three seasons until the end
of the 2008 season. While with the Giants, McQuarters made a key play in the 2007 National Football Conference (NFC) divisional playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys, leading to the Giants’ victory.
During the 2007 season, McQuarters did not have any interceptions during the regular season but made interceptions in each of the first three playoff games. The Giants went on to beat the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, earning McQuarters
his first and only Super Bowl ring.
During his 11 years in the NFL, McQuarters had 371 tackles, only 60 of which were solo, three sacks, 41 deflected passes, three forced fumbles and 14 interceptions returned for a total of 415 yards and three touchdowns.
