Former cricketers criticise Afrid’s leadership during the recently concluded ODI series in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760
Although http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-Afridi-c2482, the former chief selector, Abdul Qadir, criticised the skipper, saying that he did not display the responsibility he had.
The skipper just managed to score 28 runs at an average of 28 in the first three batting innings while in the last two ODI defeats, he was dismissed, playing irresponsible shots.
In the first three ODIs, Pakistan restricted West Indies to manageable totals, bowling first, and earned consecutive victories, displaying strong batting performances.
Qadir said that he was surprised that the skipper did not learn from his mistakes. He also added that a captain should lead his team from the front but he lacked the spirit to show his responsibility.
“He may be a good player but his approach has damaged Pakistan cricket a lot as we have lost quite a few matches only due to his reckless attitude”, said the former cricketer.
Another former cricketer, Saleem Malik, said that having experience of playing in 325 ODIs, Afridi should need to work on his batting.
Malik also said that the captain should realize that he is representing Pakistan which is not an ordinary team.
“He has played more than 300 matches and if he is a captain that doesn’t mean that he is forgiven for every mistake he makes”, added Malik.
Malik was also of the opinion that Afridi has never been a right man to lead Pakistan and he was appointed merely because the board did not have any other option.
On the contrary, former spinner, Iqbal Qasim, said that Afridi needs to improve his batting but his leadership qualities are marvellous.
In the recently concluded International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup 2011, he brilliantly guided his side to the semifinals of the tournament. Although his batting was anonymous, he gave a marvellous bowling performance, becoming the highest wicket-taker
by claiming 21 wickets.
Pakistan will now face West Indies in the Test series, starting from May 12.
Misbah will lead the Pakistani Test side as a captain since Afridi has retired from Test cricket, citing that he did not possess the temperament required to play in this format of cricket.
