Former great Gerhard Berger backs Red Bull
Gerhard Berger, a former Austrian Formula One racing driver, pronounces Red Bull to be the most favourite team of the race lovers for this season. He is of the view that the team had won most of the races this year and people consider them to be the most deserving team for the title of 2010 Season.
The Austrian team, with the fastest car of the year, has been able to bag 11 pole positions in twelve races to date. Berger further added if the team somehow would not be able to make it to the top by the end of the year the reason would just be the infighting of the members.
Though the team has already secured six race wins this season, more than any other team so far, they were capable of doing far better. But the team lost their competitiveness in some races, like in Turkey.
The team has had very few mechanical or technical issues, rather team-mate clashes and their occasional mistakes, removed Red Bull from their top slot. However, they were able comeback in the last race in Hungary as they snatched the lead of both Championships, after Mark Webber took victory of the weekend.
The Aussie racer has a lead of only four-points over Lewis Hamilton of McLaren, who holds second place in the Drivers’ Championship. Red Bull stands only eight points ahead of McLaren in the Constructors’ Championship.
Berger used to own 50% of the Scuderia Toro Rosso, the other Formula One team owned by Red Bull. He believes that it was the ability of the Red Bull drivers as well as the competitiveness of their RB6, which let them make a few mistakes and still rest at the top of the charts.
"The car is that good. They can make mistakes and still be ahead. Actually, they should be leading the World Championship much more clearly", he told the Auto, Moto und Sport, a leading German automobile magazine, published fortnightly.
He further added that there had been many more mistakes that are still hidden. The fact that Red Bull, despite all their ills and odds, still hold the Championship standings, clearly demonstrates, ‘This car is in a class of its own’.
Well, with all that is visible so far, Red Bull's biggest mistake was witnessed in Turkey.Webber and his team-mate Sebastian Vettel bumped into each other while they were both running head to head for the first place finish on the podium. The crash granted a one-two finish to McLaren, who emerged as Red Bull’s biggest competitors for the season.
Another very prominent rival for Red Bull that has come up in full force in the past few races is Ferrari. The entire team crew of Ferrari are exclusively backing their driver, Fernando Alonso as was confirmed by their team ordering in Germany where they were also penalised for this.
While commenting on Ferrari’s team ordering, Berger said that no one must kid himself as it is very clear that Alonso is the better man at the team. If Ferrari could somehow make it to the top it is only possible with Alonso and of course the team knows that very well.
As for McLaren, Berger thinks they would not be a very big problem for Red Bull. He added that they have the "best starting position”, but still that is not a big threat for them. He concluded saying, “McLaren has two drivers who they do not have to pay much attention to, to keep under control".
