Former greats insist BAM to appoint a chief coach for national squad – Badminton News
It seems the Malaysian badminton circle wants a few reforms in the coaching and training plan of action for the national team as they have insist to appoint a head coach to put the national squad on the right track.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) came under fire when two members of its coaching staff left the setup after criticising policies of the governing body.
At the moment, BAM has different coaches for Singles and Doubles teams and former international Malaysian shuttlers believe that this is the main reason of country’s recent failures in the arena.
Former national chief coach Razif Sidek stated that the national body should stop experimenting and they should find an eligible supremo to run the team’s matters.
He added that a new head coach must be given all the liberty to implement his plan of action and only he should be accountable for the team’s performance.
He said, "BAM has been changing its structure so often and even tried a part-time high performance director and a committee but it is the right time to move back to appointing a chief coach which will be very effective."
The Men’s Doubles legend Cheah Soon Kit, who earned silver medal in 1996 Olympics, also raised his voice and supported Razif Sidek’s point of view.
Soon Kit briefed the media that BAM must take some unusual steps to save the country’s badminton future.
He asserted that only a head coach can ensure consistency in the strategies and it is the right time to make consistent progress for the 2016 Olympics.
He said, "There should be only one person who is good enough and very knowledgeable in charge. This is the ideal situation for Malaysia to be successful in the 2016 Olympics."
Moreover, Soon Kit also opposed the idea of bringing a temporary coach and suggested that he should be given special goals for the next four years and if he fails then he must be accountable to the coaching and training committee.
Later the two-time All England champion Datuk Tan Yee Khan also joined the league and asserted BAM to find a suitable candidate for this post.
According to the reports, national body is considering Park Joo Bong for this post but final decision will be made in coaching and training committee meeting on September 8, 2012.
