Former interim coach of Miami Dolphins, Todd Bowles going through a bad phase in career
At present, it seems that the former interim coach of the Miami Dolphins, Todd Bowles is going through a bad phase in his career. After being sidelined for the head coach slot by the Oakland Raiders, Bowles was also neglected by his former team, the Dolphins
for their head coaching vacancy.
To make matters worse for him is the news that the Dolphins intend to hire defensive backs coach of Cincinnati Bengals, Kevin Coyle for their defensive coach position.
It turns out that Bowles would land up nowhere in the end even though he had proved much in the three games he coached the Dolphins team.
Bowles had been brought forward as the interim coach by the Dolphins owner, Stephen Ross following Dolphins elimination from the playoffs. Ross had wanted to see a change in the team and so he had the then coach, Tony Sparano sacked. Bowles who was appointed
for the remaining three games led his team remarkably well with a track record of 2-1.
Ross wanted to make the Dolphins a winning organisation, so when he sidelined Bowles, who had been quite successful in his short tenure, it came out as a bit of surprise for everyone.
Bowles had made it as one of the three finalists for the head coach job and had also been interviewed twice in this regard but in the end Ross and general manager, Jeff Ireland decided to bring in Joe Philbin, the former assistant coach of the Green Bay
Packers.
What would have been more surprising for Bowles is the fact that the Raiders have now signed Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator, Dennis Allen as their new head coach for four years.
Bowles at one stage along with being a strong contender for the Dolphins’ head coach post was also being closely looked upon by the general manager of the Raiders, Reggie McKenzie. Bowles is a respected defence specialist and has proved his worth as a defensive
coach. The Raiders were faced with a weak and fragile defence and it was sure that the Raiders were looking for someone who could ensure that their defence which was the primary reason why they were eliminated from the playoff race would get back on track.
Bowles had looked a strong possibility in this regard who could help improve the Raiders defence which has been at its weakest this season.
The Raiders defence has been conceding an average of 5.0 yards per carry, and allowed 30 touchdown passes this season, thereby becoming one of the only four teams in the National Football League (NFL) to do so.
The Raiders have also broken the Kansas City Chiefs record for most number of penalties committed by a team this season.
However, McKenzie chose rather to bring in Allen to improve their failing defence. So Bowles who was at one time looking a strong contender for two teams has now fallen out of favour.
The situation has become more dismal for Bowles as the Dolphins are now set to bring in Coyle as their new defensive coach. Coyle had interviewed with the Dolphins on Wednesday. Coyle has remained a coach for the Bengals' for nine seasons.
Some news circulating suggest that Philbin is a strong supporter of Coyle and the two have remained close friends even though they have never worked together in a single team in NFL.
So the situation has turned out to be critical for Bowles as he will now be faced with the prospect of looking for a job with some other team. At present, none of the AFC East or AFC West teams are in need of a defensive coach.
