Former rider John Hopkins wants to restart his MotoGP career – MotoGP news
Former MotoGP rider John Hopkins, who had his career eclipsed by an unpleasant series of injuries, is now targeting a winning start at the British Superbike Series in order to make a comeback in MotoGP by the 2012 season.
The American rider’s career in premier class consists of 100 starts as well as racing in the World Superbike Championship. He also signed a number of series over the winter season to get back in motorcycle racing.
But at present, his focus is to get the championship title of British Superbike 2011 season, with the Samsung Crescent Suzuki team.
Hopkins had to face little delay in preparation for his BSB run, when he had to play in place for the injured Rizla Suzuki rider Alvaro Bautista at the second round of the MotoGP season, Gran Premio bwin de Espana.
He said, “The MotoGP ride went really good, I was extremely grateful to be given the opportunity again and it was a good experience. We couldn’t have really asked for a better weekend and I was one of the few people who didn’t fall off so that went to plan.”
Hopkins has previously spent five years at Rizla Suzuki and called it an end after his best finish of fourth position in the 2007 World Championship. Then unfortunately the following three years were really disappointing as he was in Kawasaki and running
towards the doom of his career.
Continuing to the other categories, World Superbike and AMA Superbike, he had some injuries to finish his struggling streak. After the worst time, he now claims to be physically fit and focusing on his return to the most worshipped paddock in the motorcycle
racing world.
Hopkins added, “But I am contracted to ride in BSB now and that is my main aim. I am fully focused on the challenge and looking forward to it. My ultimate goal is to get back as a full-time rider in MotoGP again and I felt that this was my best option for
this year to help me.”
