Former spin greats want Pakistan to play a spin-oriented attack
Spin bowling greats of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 have advised the Pakistan team management to rely more on spinners in the ensuing games of the ongoing ICC World Cup if they want to reach the final of the show piece event.
Former chief selector of Pakistan Cricket Board, Iqbal Qasim on Tuesday praised the performance of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-Afridi-c2482 and Mohammad Hafeez in the mega event so far. However, he suggested that it would be better for Pakistan if they go with a two-prong
pace attack and base the rest of the attack on slow bowlers.
“Afridi is bowling very well and Muhammad Hafeez is also doing a decent job but I would look at ways to play both the specialist spinners, Abdul Rehman and Saeed Ajmal against the stronger teams,” he advised.
Qasim feels the wickets would become more batting friendly as the World Cup progresses and in those conditions the spinners would be quite helpful in halting the flow of runs, specifically during the batting power-play overs.
Qasim said that Pakistan has got quality spinners and was confident that they could be quite handy against any opposition in the Subcontinent conditions.
The legendary leg-spinner, Abdul Qadir also reckons the spinners should be given a major role in Pakistan’s attack against big teams, adding that the role of spinners would grow as the tournament progresses.
“Teams with quality spinners will have a definite edge as the event goes on. That is why many teams are now giving the new ball to spinners and it makes sense,” he said.
However he cautioned the side from falling into the ‘spin-trap’ and said that the final playing XI should be picked after reading the pitch on the day of the match, as he feels the Sri Lankan pitches support the pace bowlers in the start.
Both Qadir and Qasim also cautioned the team against complacency at any stage of the show piece event as the real test would come in the knockout stage.
Test spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Danish-Kaneria-c1314 also joined the former greats and said that the conditions in the Subcontinent are such that the spinners could be given new ball.
