Former trainer believes Olympian Anthony Joshua is as good as Lennox Lewis – Boxing News
Former trainer of boxer Anthony Joshua believes he is more or less like former world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis. Joshua, who climbed the ladder of success at London Olympics 2012, is being compared by many with Lennox Lewis, and the same is claimed
by his former trainer as well.
Joshua won the gold medal after defeated Roberto Cammarelle of Italy on Sunday at the ExCel Arena. Sean Murphy, Joshua’s former coach and former Commonwealth Games gold medallist, expressed his joy saying he is ‘incredibly proud’ of his fighter.
“He's so incredibly strong. I've got a bone graft in my left wrist and once I had to have it done again after he hit me while we were training with the pads because he broke it,” said Murphy to BBC.
Joshua stepped into the boxing ring for the first time when he was 18 at the Finchley Amateur Boxing Club. Joshua was pushed into the sport by his cousin Gbenga Ileyemi, who was the 2011 Amateur Boxing Association champion.
Murphy recalls he was the one who suggested Joshua to come to the club and train because he saw something special in the young fighter.
“I told him to come back and train at the club because I knew he had something special in him,” revealed Murphy.
“He's achieved so much in such a short space of time. It just shows you how good he's going to be.”
“He's as good a fighter as Lennox Lewis.”
Not just Murphy, many other former fighters and analysts are of the view that the young fighter’s fighting style resembles the former champion a lot. Even Lennox Lewis appreciated Joshua, calling him a huge man who has the potential to reach the top.
As of now, Murphy is of the view that Anthony has the heart and courage of a champion, along with the skills. He is confident that his ex-fighter will make a mark in the industry, making him and his camp members proud.
Murphy no longer trains Joshua but considers the Olympian as his all-time best student and now he is even more proud of him.
