Former winners’ domination at the Masters is over, Bubba Watson wins
Bubba Watson has won the first major of the year, defeating Tiger Woods' high expectations to shine at the Masters on Sunday, April 8.
The Masters Tournament completed the 2012 episode and again the winner made his debut win this year. This is the most appealing factor attached to the Masters.
Despite having the former winners in the field, new players win most of the times. The same happened this year at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
Watson, the 33-year-old American, scored a 10-under 278 and played well in the four-day tournament. His scores were matched by the South African Louis Oosthuizen on Sunday.
Both of them were tied with each other and were quite close to victory. Both played in the playoff mode and Watson won by making an early birdie on the 2nd hole.
This was the first victory for Watson, whereas Oosthuizen was also close to his debut. Before 2012, neither player had ever reached such a high leaderboard position.
“I don’t try to win tournaments for fame. I don’t do any of that. It's just me. I’m just Bubba. I goof around,” Watson said. “Hopefully I keep having the passion to play golf and keep doing what I’m doing”.
Woods finished tied for the 40th position at the end of the day. The 36-year-old American scored a 5-over par and 293 strokes in total.
He displayed a mediocre performance at the Augusta and was also surrounded by many hurdles.
“I didn’t hit the ball very good this week,” said Woods. “And what’s frustrating is I know what to do, and I just don’t do it. I get out there and I just don’t trust it at all”.
He is a four-time Masters champion and recorded top-10 finishes eight times in the past. Finishing on the 40th position is the worst up till now, which was never expected from Woods.
The defeat is also making Woods more worried. He wanted to win but Watson took the glory away from him. However, the reason for Woods' loss could be his worst performance at Augusta.
It can easily be seen that the former winners’ domination may be over now. All the new, young and talented golf players are leading the Masters and other majors as well.
