Former women’s junior middleweight champion hospitalized
Tragedy has struck today as “The Coal Miner’s Daughter” Christy Martin, a top female boxer, has been hospitalized after reportedly being shot and stabbed by her husband in Florida.
Bad Left Hook and others confirmed that Martin fortunately sustained non-life threatening injuries.  According to the Orlando Sentinel Martin managed to flag down a motorist following the incident who notified authorities.
Martin placed full blame on her husband, 66-year-old James Martin.
According to CFNews13, she returned home from being away for a couple of days and was confronted with her husband, armed with a handgun and a knife.
Though investigators were unable to retrieve Mr. Martin at the couple’s home in Apopka, Florida, they found evidence of a violent struggle.
Martin was reportedly wounded in her upper torso and left leg.
A state-wide search continues for Mr. Martin, described as a 5-foot-10, 165-pound bald white man with brown eyes.
Authorities clarified that they believe he may be a danger to himself and are concerned for his safety as well as the safety of others.
Mr. Martin was his wife’s boxing trainer preceding and following their marriage in 1991.
Martin retired from the sport in 2009, after appearing on undercards headlined by the likes of Felix Trinidad, Mike Tyson, and Evander Holyfield.
She left with a professional record of 49-5, with 31 KOs, and is widely regarded as one of most influential women in the history of the sport, having mixed it up with Muhammad Ali’s daughter Laila, and Holly Holm.
Against Ali she was stopped in the fourth round of a bout widely considered one of the most significant fights in the history of women’s boxing.
An article on Wikipedia.com claims Martin has been recognized as the “most successful and prominent female boxer in the United States.”
