Former world champion Genaro Hernandez dies at 45 due to cancer – Boxing news
Former WBA and WBC Super Featherweight champion Genaro Hernandez passed away on Tuesday at the age of 45.
The champion was suffering from cancer for more than two years.
The American professional WBA World Super Middleweight champion Andre Ward, former IBF Super Featherweight champion Robert Guerrero and others paid their tributes to the boxer on Twitter. Hernandez worked for the betterment of HBO Boxing as a compubox technician
and a boxing instructor in Southern California.
The former world champion Hernandez went for many cable television boxing shows during his prime time. The HBO Boxing played an important role to air many of his big fights. In his professional boxing career, Hernandez won several World Championships against
the best prospects of the world.
There is no denying the fact that Hernandez, nicknamed as Chicanito, displayed extraordinary boxing skills and tactics fighting at the three different Light Welterweight, Lightweight and Super Featherweight divisions of boxing.
The 6 feet tall, Hernandez fought 41 of his total fights of which he won 38 competitive bouts including 17 impressive knockout wins with 2 losses and one draw in his professional boxing career.
Hernandez was given 8 of a total of 10 cancer treatments under the special care of Caplan at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre in Texas. The treatment of rhabdomyosarcoma was provided by the Top Rank promoter Bob Arum. All the travel and medical expenses of
Hernandez were borne by Arum. Hernandez was employed under the supervision of Arum as a broadcaster.
Caplan said, “He was a fighter, he'd never give up, and just thinking about it now is very hard for me.”
One of the greatest contests that Hernandez brought to the public was the December 2010 Humberto Soto vs. Urbano Antillon fight card. The two fighters met at the Honda Centre in Anaheim.
Hernandez’s last fight was against Floyd Mayweather Jr. He lost the decision fighting at the Las Vegas Hilton in Nevada, United States. Floyd Mayweather won his WBC super featherweight title in the process.
