Forms of ID Question?

A friend of mine used to live in QLD with her mum but recently moved to Sydney, and left her birth certificate with her mum. She recently had her wallet stolen with all her forms of id and now she can't get anything because you need at least one major form and she is having extreme difficulty getting in contact with her mum.

What should she do? She is living with a family member rent-free at the moment and has no bank account or any other form of identifcation other than an extremely old student card.

Is there any possible way

  1. People have their wallets stolen all the time and they manage.

If she had credit cards, she will be able to have them replaced and in fact should already have notified the bank or credit card company that they had been stolen. She will need identifying information but a birth certificate will not be required.

Medicare will replace her Medicare card if she can provide identifying information.

If she had an 18+ card or Driver's License, a birth certificate will not be needed but she will need to present herself in person to the issuing authority. She should have already notified these bodies of the loss.

For some of the above, a statutory declaration may be needed.

Once she has replaced some of her ID, she can open a bank account and can also apply for her birth certificate from the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages in her state of birth.

  2. My suggestion is to ring Medicare and explain the situation to them and they should be able to tell her what is to next. I think she may have to get a Satutory Declaration completed, but not sure. Their phone is 132011

  3. I feel sorry for your friend but it does say something  about carrying all your ID in one place.  You did not say how old your friend is as that will depend on what she needs.    There is always one way to get replacement ID.  First report it to police and get an incident number, then approach medicare and get a new card (she must have a medicare number). If she has any old bills eg: power, water then these can assist her in getting recognised again.  Also if she drives she can apply for a new licence to be sent to her address, this is another avenue.   Best of luck.

  4. I find it hard to believe anyone in this day and age "has no bank account".

If you mean she has no cards because they were stolen, then she needs to contact her bank and have them replaced.

  5. Could she write to her old school or somewhere she worked and ask them to send a reference.Maybe she could go and see a Justice of the Peace or Citizens Advice Bureau. Does she have no other relatives, friends or old neighbours who she could ask to try and locate her Mum and give her a message to contact her urgently?

If she is living with a family member rent free are they able to verify her identity. She surely went to the police station to check whether her things had been handed in. They should also be able to help.

When she gets new ID I suggest she photocopy them and put those in a very safe place.
