Formula 1: Bernie Ecclestone rules out Roman Grand Prix
The 2010 Formula 1 season was perhaps the best season the sport has ever seen. It had plenty of excitement, drama and thrill. Not only the fans loved it, but also the teams and drivers who participated in it loved every minute of the season.
It was the first time that the sport hosted 19 races. But 2011 promises to be even bigger with the addition of Indian Grand Prix, bringing the total number of races in the season to 20.
In 2012, the US Grand Prix will also return to the sport once again but it will be hosted in a new track in Austin, Texas instead of Indianapolis.
Bernie Ecclestone has been coming up with even more ideas like a Russian Grand Prix or even an African Grand Prix but that is something which requires a lot of time since the International Automobile Federation (FIA) is facing financial problems.
Quite a few countries and cities have showed their interest of holding a Formula 1 grand prix. One of these venues is Rome. The organisers in Rome have been insisting that Formula 1 will hold a Roman Grand Prix soon but recently, it was revealed that since
there is already an Italian Grand Prix in the Formula 1 calendar, there cannot be a Roman Grand Prix.
It was revealed in a letter from Bernie Ecclestone to the city’s mayor which was leaked in the media recently. It stated that one grand prix per country is enough and since Monza has precedence over Rome, there is no point of having a Roman Grand Prix anytime
soon.
Since most of the teams and drivers have already stated that a 20-race Formula 1 season should be enough, the FIA does not seem interested in holding more races than that.
One of the main organisers of the Roman Grand Prix Maurizio Flammini stated that plans of the venue will be announced on 21 January, 2011 officially but it seems that isn’t going to happen anytime soon.
