Formula 1: Fairuz Fauzy might make race debut in 2011
Lotus Renault GP recently revealed that they have signed the young Malaysian driver Fairuz Fauzy as their reserve driver alongside teammates Robert Kubica and Vitaly Petrov.
The team’s boss Eric Boullier stated that Fairuz is an extremely talented driver and he must join Formula 1 as a full season driver in 2012 by latest. Since Eric did not rule out the possibility of Fauzy making his debut in 2011, it is expected that the
team might use him in a race in 2011 as well.
Fairuz Fauzy was Lotus Racing Team’s reserve driver in 2010. Despite the fact that he had a five-year contract with them, he left Lotus and joined Renault. Group Lotus joined Renault as well after leaving Team Lotus recently.
“If Fairuz did well at some point in time towards the end of the season, he would give him a shot at it,” said Eric.
Since Fairuz Fauzy is closely aligned with Proton, he could make his race debut most likely in the last couple of races in 2011.
However, it would not be easy to outperform his teammates Vitaly Petrov and Robert Kubica since both of them are extremely good drivers and it is going to be a big challenge for the young Malaysian to prove himself under their shadow.
“He (Fauzy) is being developed and trained for better things with us and is not going to be a passenger. He has potential and we need to work on him to make him mentally and physically ready for such sport,” said Boullier.
Robert Kubica has been an exceptional driver throughout the 2010 season and it is expected that he will be a threat to the top running drivers in 2011 as well. It is going to be a great experience for Fairuz Fauzy driving alongside him as he would get to
learn a lot from the Polish driver.
Team Lotus had an extremely disappointing first season in the sport and after a lot of controversies and drama, Group Lotus decided to depart from the team.
