Formula 1: Gerhard Berger praises Red Bull 'genius' Adrian Newey
Former Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger recently stated that the reason Red Bull is a notch ahead of other teams is because of the fact that they have a ‘genius’ like Adrian Newey by their side.
He believes that they will dominate the 2011 Formula 1 season as well because Adrian will come up with another amazing piece of machinery for the season.
“Adrian Newey is quite simply in the area of aerodynamics a genius. It would however be much, much better if driving genius would play the crucial role,” said Gerhard.
Newey won his 7th constructors’ title in 2010. He helped teams like Williams and McLaren win the championship before that and Berger believes that the person who enables a team to come up with the best possible package is usually the team’s chief
technical officer.
“I do not see a chance for the others, unless the regulations change dramatically,” Berger told the media.
It was quite an amazing season for Red Bull in 2010 as they clearly had the best car on the grid at each venue and teams like McLaren and Ferrari were helpless in front of them.
2010 was a battle between the top three teams but it is expected that Mercedes GP are seriously going to challenge everyone in 2011.
Other than that, there are going to be 20 races in the 2011 Formula 1 season which is definitely going to increase the excitement level of the sport amongst the viewers all across the globe.
However, former co-owner of Toro Rosso ruled out his chances of returning to the sport as a team owner.
“With the way F1 is today, there is not the opportunity. I cannot afford it. The sport has become too expensive. You just can't find the money that you need in order to do a good job on the open market,” Berger said.
Nevertheless, 2011 is going to be another thrilling season and it would be interesting to see how the teams have prepared themselves for new challenges at the first pre-season test session in Valencia on 1 February, 2011.
