Formula 1: Jos Verstappen backs Ferrari boss' proposal
Jos Verstappen is a former Formula 1 driver who used to drive for small constructors throughout his 9-year career. He recently stated that the teams should be allowed to use three cars on the grid.
This idea was proposed by Ferrari’s boss Luca di Montezemolo who believes that “small constructors” should be ruled out of the sport and the remaining teams be allowed to use 3 cars on the grid.
“For the teams it's not expensive as the parts are already there. A third car could be a unique opportunity for young drivers to get into F1. If it was up to me, I would have the maximum age of a third driver at let's say 23. You could make it a kind of
development car for a talented driver,” said Verstappen.
This idea was slammed by many people including Max Mosley who stated that Formula 1 is what it is currently because of these small teams.
It has happened a number of times that these “small constructors” become even more powerful than the most established teams in the sport after racing for a couple of years. Red Bull Racing is the perfect example in this case. The team was unable to perform
along the top running teams when they started in 2005 but only six years later, they became even better than McLaren and Ferrari and won the 2010 drivers’ and constructors’ championships.
If Formula 1 does not give new teams a chance, the sport will stop growing. It will become even more “streamlined” than the rest of the motorsports in the world.
According to the current situation, the teams hardly get time for testing and secondly, it would not be easy to manage three drivers in a single team. But Jos believes that the FIA should seriously consider this proposal as he thinks that it would help the
teams grow and make Formula 1 even more competitive.
