Formula 1 Latest: Lotus Renault GP’s Robert Kubica undergoes third surgery
Renault driver, Robert Kubica underwent another surgery on Wednesday at the Santa Corona hospital near Genoa, Italy.
This is the third surgery of the driver since he has been admitted to the hospital after the horrific accident during the Rally race earlier this month. It took the doctors eight hours to complete the operation over his injured elbow before he was shifted
to the Intensive Care Unit.
Last week a nine hour long surgery was carried on Kubica’s arm, shoulder and leg while an initial operation, extending to seven hours, was carried the same day he was air lifted to the hospital after the car crash. The first surgery involved complicated
working on his right-hand, which went successful and prevented him from having his hand amputated.
After today’s surgery the medical staff of the Italian hospital talked to the reporters. One of the doctors stated, “The operation was a success and it will probably not be necessary for him to undergo further surgery."
However, he confirmed that still Kubica needs to spend a few more days in intensive care, while it may take him another couple of weeks before he can be discharged from the hospital.
Moreover, sources closer to him revealed that the driver will spend a little time in Italy before going back to his home. However, still no time has been confirmed for his return to the track.
Some initial reports suggested that he might not be able to hit the track again until the end of the 2011 Formula 1 season. On the other hand, a senior doctor from the hospital said ahead of this last operation that the 26-year-old’s discharge time will
be predicted after he was gone through all the required operations and their results start showing.
After the third surgery, the Orthopedics Head, Francesco Lanza told the media, "The elbow was rebuilt satisfactorily but it is harder to give a prognosis about the recovery of functionality."
The first operation is believed to have shown miraculous results while the second one was also a success. In a couple of days the after effects of this week’s endeavour will also start showing.
