Formula 1 Latest: Niki Lauda disapproves Kubica’s decision of Rally racing
Niki Lauda, the former Austrian Formula 1 racing driver and three-time World Champion disapproves Robert Kubica’s decision to take part in Rally racing. Lauda believes rally is one of the most dangerous forms of racing and blames Kubica for risking his career
for such a ‘hobby’.
Kubica, the Lotus Renault GP driver met a horrific accident earlier this month during a rally race, in Italy. The accident not only diminished his chances of competing in the 2011 Formula 1 season but also put the rest of his racing career in jeopardy.
Many of the teams in Formula 1 have forbidden their drivers from taking part in any activity that could endanger them. The Pole had also spent four years of his Formula 1 career under similar restriction as BMW Sauber, his previous team, never let him partake
Rally racing. Many believe that it was a big mistake at Renault’s part to let the driver indulge in such an activity.
The accident has come as a ‘big blow’ to the Lotus-backed team. Eric Boullier, the team boss of Renault, accepted last week that the outfit planned its 2011 season around the 26-year-old; Kubica's last year’s performance was very encouraging as he wrapped
the season at 8th place even without a very competitive car.
Some of his spectacular races made the race analysts see a future world champion in him. However, the high hopes of the team were crushed right with the crash of his car. Now, the upcoming season will be embraced by the team without its ace driver.
The triple world champion Lauda stated earlier on Sunday that only the driver is to be blamed for the incident. He said, "It makes no sense for him to put his job and his life at risk like this. Was it unreasonable? Of course it was."
He further added that the team is equally responsible for not stopping Kubica from putting his life at risk. The Austrian proclaimed, "He has to ensure that he can do his job, and his job is Formula One. Only he is to blame for what happened to him. Did
he have to be doing this? No!"
Over the past two weeks most of the race analysts have expressed similar thoughts. However, the driver and his team have defended the decision of Rally racing. Last week Boullier told the media that Rally made Kubica ‘happy’ and above all, the team wishes
to see its drivers happy and contented.
Moreover, the Red Bull driver and reigning world Champion, Sebastian Vettel also agreed with Boullier. He stressed on the fact that racing is a risky job. He explained saying that no matter what kind of series a driver is taking part in, he is uncertain
for what the next corner holds for him. Therefore, Vettel insisted that nobody must be blamed for the unfortunate event rather all must hope to see the Pole come back soon.
