Formula 1: Luca di Montezemolo believes FIA should ‘rethink’ new rules
Ferrari President, Luca di Montezemolo believes that the International Automobile Federation (FIA) should ‘rethink’ the new regulations they hope to introduce to the sport in the upcoming seasons.
It is believed that he is referring to the major changes the FIA hopes to make in the 2013 Formula 1 season regarding a ‘greener Formula 1.’
“We will have to work together with the [FIA] for an improvement of rules and regulations. I don't think it is possible that it is the only professional sport where it is not possible to train,” di Montezemolo said at the launch of his team's new F150.
However, Luca believes that Formula 1 should not just be an ‘aerodynamics’ competition and the teams should be allowed to play around with their cars more.
“We need to avoid that F1 only becomes an aerodynamic test. We are not in the satellite world; we are not in the aerodynamic world. We need to leave the space to the mechanics and the engines. We need stable rules, but we should contain the DNA of F1,” he
added.
Other than that, Luca is not happy about the fact that the FIA banned in-season testing which obstructs the teams from experimenting more and can only rely on simulators and wind-tunnel technology which can never be completely accurate.
The 2010 season was pretty good for Ferrari but the team is hoping that they will have a much better 2011 season. They revealed their new car, Ferrari F150 in Italy on Friday.
However, Luca believes that Formula 1 should consider the future as well and use the best possible technology in the upcoming seasons of the sport in order to keep the ‘feel’ of Formula 1 intact while making the technology more efficient and cheaper.
“That means maximum technology, maximum performance and innovative technology - and also to anticipate what will be the transfer of technology to GT cars. It will be useful to get back to KERS, which opens a very important perspective for GT cars,” said
Luca.
