Formula 1: Michael Schumacher says still a lot of work to be done

Mercedes GP’s seven-time world champion driver Michael Schumacher believes that the team will have to improve a lot on their previous performance if they want to challenge the top running teams in 2011.
Schumacher was unable to score a single podium position in the 2010 Formula 1 season and finished in 9th place in the drivers’ standings nearly 70 points behind his teammate Nico Rosberg who finished in 7th place.
It was an extremely disappointing result for Schumacher as it was statistically the worst Formula 1 season for the seven-time world champion.
However, the fans are expecting a lot from the team in 2011 and it is expected that Michael Schumacher will put up a much-improved performance in the new season. The German thinks that the team will need to improve its pace and must work fast as the season opening race in Bahrain, which is scheduled for 13 March, is not far away.
“Yes, we are slightly concerned but then on the other hand we know where we will and want to go to. The first race will tell us truly what is the situation,” he said.
He also stated that it is not going to be easy for them to score wins in the first couple of races as they are still trying to understand the mechanics of their new car.
The German said that the lap times of the pre-season test sessions are not that important as they only give an idea of what the teams are capable of.
“Lap times, yes they are important but maybe not right now. Naturally if you are quickest all the time that would be the perfect situation but we know coming from last year this is not possible and we have to build up our way,” said Schumacher.
However, Mercedes GP are quite confident about the new season and want to settle for nothing less than a title in 2011.
